Zimbabwe Communist party has urged the transport operators to stop exploiting workers during festive season where it has been proved that the workers are forced to work long hours without rest in the name of making more money.
The ZCP official Ngqabutho Nicholas Mabhena said once again the festive season is on and workers will soon be travelling to various destinations to be with their families after a long and hard year.
He said already schools are closing for the end of year, and other workers in Zimbabwe and in the diaspora will be travelling in the next few days.
"We have observed over the years that during the festive season, transport operators want to exploit workers in this sector by forcing them to work long hours without any rest in the name of making money. As Communists, we call on public transport operators to allow their workers to rest ,if there is high demand for transport, public transport operators must employ temporary workers to assist instead of asking one driver to drive from Bulawayo to Johannesburg without resting," he said.
"We call on passengers to always check on the condition of the driver. If passengers realise that the driver is tired, they should allow him/her to park on the side of the road and rest. We further call on the workers employed as traffic police not to ask for bribes at roadblocks but to check if the vehicles are roadworthy. We can never construct a democratic and socialist Zimbabwe if we continue to lose more workers during the festive season through road accidents. Let us stay safe in our roads and remember that Zanu (PF) has destroyed the road infrastructure over the years."
He said the only way to stay safe, is to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and driving within the speed limit.
