Beitbridge district has received 16 000 litres of fuel for distribution to 21 famers under the command agriculture programme, Masauso Mawocha Agritex officer for the area has confirmed recently.
"We have received 16000 litres of diesel and the fuel will be distributed to the 21 farmers who voluntarily made available 187 hectares of land for the programme.
We are expecting to harvest 935 tonnes of maize which means five tonnes per hectare from the irrigated land which range from commercial, resettlements and A2 farmers," said Mawocha in an interview.
He also said that the target is achievable because all the farms are under irrigation schemes and that out of the 15 wards in the district, these farms are in ward 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 13 and 14.
However, other inputs like seeds, compound D, fertiliser and lime will be collected from Gwanda.
Extension workers have been deployed throughout the district training farmers on maize production in order to miximise on production and reduce losses.
