Health scare as Harare to shut down water taps in 24hours

Harare residents must brace up for an impending health hazard after the Harare City Council is reported to be contemplating shutting down the water treatment plant within the next 24 hours after its failure to acquire treatment chemicals.
An alert message sent by the Harare Residents Trust has urged residents to share the little water they have to avert the spread of diseases.
Recently the Harare City Council revealed that their chemical supplier from Beira had to temporarily close after their plant was affected by Cyclone Idai.

The Harare Residents Trust (HRT) has been made aware by City officials that the Harare City Council is left with 24hrs supply of water treatment chemicals, and that only a small area in Kuwadzana has some municipal water supplies. The rest of Harare does not have municipal water. There are heightened fears of a major outbreak of cholera and typhoid if the situation is not immediately addressed as a national disaster. Water treatment chemicals suppliers are said to have refused to release any water treatment chemicals until they are paid what they are owed by the City of Harare. Nearly 2.5 million residents live in Harare. Water engineers are reportedly considering completely shutting down the water treatment plant. The HRT urges the Town Clerk, Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to manage this situation as a priority or the looming disaster due to water shortages will be laid squarely on their doorsteps. They have the chance to address it, they must.
The HRT urges residents with personal boreholes to share the little available water and help neighbours. Residents are advised to preserve the little water stored in their households. The situation is not ending anytime soon. The poor, especially women and girl children, are the most vulnerable in this water crisis which is unveiling before our eyes.
