Fisherman drowns in Chiweshe

A 22-YEAR-OLD Chiweshe fisherman drowned at Negomo dam in Chiweshe on Tuesday after an inflated tractor tube he was using capsized due to excessive wind that blew it away.
Mashonaland Central deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati confirmed the incident.
"I can confirm a case of sudden death in Chiweshe by drowning, a fisherman Richard Chirunga drowned while casting his nets using a inflated tractor tyre tube which capsized and killed him," Masikati said.
A witness Edson Chirunga (32) who is a brother to the late fisherman said he saw him drowning and tried to rescue him but his efforts were fruitless.
"I was close to the dam when the tragedy struck, l saw my young brother drowning l tried to rescue him but my efforts were futile, other villagers came too and failed it only took the help of the police sub aqua to retrieve the body two days after," he said.
Meanwhile, the police warned fishermen to stop using inflated tractors tubes when casting their nets as it puts their lives in danger.
"We are warning fishermen to desist from using inflated tractor tubes as it exposes their lives to danger instead they should use boats or fish from outside the dams," said Masikati.
