Three members of the Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) have been jailed for 30 months in prison for engaging in public violence during the Kgalema Montlante Commission of Inquiry outreach meeting which was held in October 2018 in Bulawayo.
Bulawayo magistrate Sthembiso Ncube convicted Marshal Sibanda (40), Welcome Moyo (30) and Venat Ncube (40) for inciting public violence.
Magistrate Ncube, however, suspended three months for five years on condition of good behaviour while the remaining 27 months were wholly suspended on condition they each pay a fine of $200.
State representative Leonard Chile told the court that on October 26, 2018, while one Wisdom Mkhwananzi was testifying before the Commission, the trio attacked a member of the public who had interjected.
"While testifying, Mkhwananzi pointed at President Emmerson Mnangagwa's portrait which was hanging behind the Commissioners. He said "I am an orphan because of this man he killed my parents." One Derrick Nkomo then interjected the testimony," said Chile.
He said the trio became angry with Nkomo's interjection resulting in a heated argument ensuing.
"The accused persons assaulted Nkomo with fists, open hands and threw steel chairs at him. This resulted in the Commission adjourning. They were subsequently arrested by members of the police who had been deployed to the Commission," said Chile.
