Matabeleland North Province has called for more government support in the education sector with particular focus on science subjects which have a bearing on the country's industrial development agenda.
This came out during a tour of projects in the area by Vice President Kembo Mohadi this Friday.
The tour saw Vice President Mohadi visiting Amandlethu High school in Lupane district, where a new Advanced level science laboratory and a girls' hostel are under construction.
Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Richard Moyo told the Vice President that the province has gaps in science subjects which are key in driving industrial development agenda.
"Setting up of science laboratories in our schools will help improve our human resource capacities."
Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Ambassador Cain Mathema reiterated the importance of ensuring schools are turned into thriving productive enterprises.
"This should be the thrust of our learning. Our schools must be productive enterprises."
Vice President Mohadi noted that the laboratory is evidence of the emphasis on a competence-based curriculum.
"The curriculum offered here is preparing learners for life and work in a largely agro based economy and in an increasingly globalised and competitive environment. Under Vision2030, the vision for social development is for government to invest in state-of-the-art facilities like science laboratories in schools working in collaboration with partners, stakeholders and school authorities."
The projects at Amandlethu High School are being funded by government and its partners including Ubuntu Schales Trust and World Vision.
