Chitungwiza Residents Trust (CHITREST) in collaboration with Chitungwiza Community Education Trust has launched a programme to train Community Nurse Aides who will provide basic nursing services to COVID-19 patients at home and at community healthcare centres as volunteers.
The Community Nurse Aides training initiative falls under CHITREST's Community Action Against Covid-19 (CAAC) Programme. Alice Kuvheya Chitungwiza residents trust (CHITREST) director said , "The CAAC Programme is aimed at mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Chitungwiza through the training of 250 Community Nurse Aides who will provide basic nursing services to COVID-19 patients as well providing community health education in the 25 wards in Chitungwiza."
Each ward will have 10 volunteers trained in collaboration with Chitungwiza Central Hospital where the Community Nurse Aides will go for their internship.
Currently 100 community healthcare volunteers from 10 wards in Chitungwiza are undergoing different levels of training.
The Community Nurse Aides will provide free home-based care to COVID-19 patients in the community as well as work at local clinics and hospitals as assistant nurses whenever the need arises.
The CAAC Programme's objective is to provide trained volunteers who can provide basic nursing and health education services to the community in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of an overwhelmed and incapacitated public healthcare system.
