Marvelous Nakamba has revealed he came close to retiring from international football following a costly mistake at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, but chose instead to redeem himself by continuing to serve the nation.
The Warriors captain delivered a commanding performance over the weekend, inspiring Zimbabwe national football team to a 3-0 victory against Botswana in the Four Nations semi-final at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium.
Nakamba dominated midfield proceedings, shielding the defence and dictating the tempo in a performance reminiscent of his peak years at Aston Villa.
His influence was felt throughout the match, as he played a role in all three goals scored by Zimbabwe. From breaking up opposition attacks to launching counter-moves, the midfielder showcased composure, vision and leadership.
Reflecting on his journey, Nakamba admitted the aftermath of his AFCON error had left him contemplating stepping away from national duty.
"I wanted to quit after that mistake in Morocco. I wanted to quit because I knew I had failed my country Zimbabwe that always comes first for me," he said.
"I felt like I had betrayed my people, but I remembered the support I have always received - even during difficult times - and that pushed me to continue and give my best."
Nakamba credited Zimbabwean fans for standing by him and said his recent performance was dedicated to them.
"I am happy after leading my team to this 3-0 win. It's for Zimbabwe, it's for the fans," he said.
His partnership with Germany-based midfielder Jonah Fabisch proved pivotal, allowing coach Marian Marinica's tactical system to flourish.
Despite limited game time at Sheffield Wednesday following his move from Luton Town, Nakamba showed no signs of rust, delivering a performance that underlined his importance to the national team setup.
With Zimbabwe now set to face Zambia in the final, the captain has urged his teammates to remain focused.
"It was a good match against Botswana, but we shouldn't let our guard down. Zambia has impressive youngsters and will be determined to stop us," he said.
"Our country deserves to smile. We need to finish the job."
Nakamba's resurgence comes at a crucial time for the Warriors, as they build momentum ahead of upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with the captain determined to lead from the front both on and off the pitch.
