Harare City Council has given ratepayers until July 6 to regularise water connections or risk facing punitive action.
The call is targeted at those either accessing council water illegally or have non-functional or stolen water meters.
In a statement on Tuesday, Harare City Council said: "Failure to regularise before the stipulated date will attract penalties. Sanctions may include prosecution and or permanent removal of the connections."
Households and business premises with non-functional water meters can enter into a special arrangement with the council for the replacement of their water meters.
