A TELONE technician based in Shurugwi, who travelled all the way to Mutare and squandered his salary with a girlfriend, made a false report to the police that he had been abducted and raped by two women.
Tinashe Muzondo of House Number 1145, Sabanga Park cooked up the story fearing a backlash from his wife.
Detectives were about to embark on a wild goose chase looking for ghost women rapists when a fellow police officer who had seen Muzondo spending his money the previous day at a night club and even played a game of pool with him, told his workmates that the report was misleading.
Muzondo was subsequently arrested last Thursday and he appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mr Charles Murowe last Friday where he was convicted on his own plea of guilty of making a false report.
He was fined $60.
Mr Nelson Makunyire prosecuted.
Officer-in-charge CID Mutare, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Chibaya, said police would have wasted resources working on a cooked story.
"Rape is a serious offence and the issue of women rapists who are abducting people is also very serious. We were going to waste a lot of resources hunting down ghost suspects. People should bear with us and understand that we will be working on several cases and for them to come up with fake stories diverting our attention and wasting resources is uncalled for. Making a false report is a criminal offence," he said.
Chief Insp Chibaya said Muzondo lied that he boarded a black BMW vehicle in Gweru with the intention of travelling to Mutare.
"He said there were two women and two men in the vehicle. He said along the way, he was abducted and the occupants drove him to Masvingo. While there he was taken to a house where the two women took turns to rape him. The men were on guard.
"The following day he said they drove him to Mutare again where he was raped again. At all the occasions he said the women collected the condoms containing his sperms. He also said he was later dropped at Sakubva Market," said Chief Insp Chibaya.
When asked by the news crew why he lied, Muzondo said he was afraid to go back to his wife and family after he squandered his salary.
"I came to Mutare alone to see my girlfriend and I used all my salary. I had no money to go back to Shurugwi and I could not confront my wife. What would I say to her?" he asked.
