THE State on Tuesday opposed bail for Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporter, Godfrey Karembera saying it has a strong case against him.

Karembera, popularly known as Madzibaba Veshanduko within the CCC circles was being represented by his lawyer Douglas Coltart when he appeared before Harare magistrate Barbara Mateko for bail hearing.

Mateko further remanded him in custody to today for bail hearing. Karembera is curently hospitalised after he was assaulted by police officers while in custody.

The State represented by Anesu Chirenje opposed bail saying if the accused is released on bail, he might commit the same offence considering that the by – elections  will be held on Saturday.

Coltart however said Karembera was tortured while in police custody and must be immediately released.

"The State mentioned the accused person was not arrested because of his political affiliation but in actual sense, it was the central reason why the police arrested and tortured him," Coltart said.

Karembera was arrested on March 17 at the intersection of Julius Nyerere Way and Nelson Mandela Avenue in Harare for wearing yellow regalia.  Police accused him of trying to deface the Mbuya Nehanda statue, chanting slogans and insulting them.
