Just days after assuming office as the newly-elected Deputy Mayor of Harare, Kudzai Kadzombe finds herself under arrest on charges of assaulting a member of the Zanu-PF party on election day.
Kadzombe secured her council seat on the ticket of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), a prominent opposition party in Zimbabwe. Confirming the arrest, CCC's Deputy Spokesperson, Gift Siziba, acknowledged the situation. However, it's worth noting that the national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, claimed to be unaware of the incident.
According to Siziba's announcement on his social media handle, Kadzombe was taken into custody by officers from the Marlborough Police Station. She faces charges related to an alleged assault on a Zanu-PF member during the recent harmonized elections. Kadzombe is scheduled to appear at the Harare Rotten Row Magistrate Court on Friday at 8:15 a.m.
In an ironic twist, Gift Siziba, who also serves as a Member of Parliament representing Pelandaba Tshabalala, experienced a similar situation. He was briefly detained on Wednesday, subsequently released, and later summoned to appear in court on Friday. His charges relate to the alleged incitement of violence at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo on the preceding Sunday.
The CCC has voiced concerns that the recent spate of arrests, which have seen more than 10 of its members detained this week, is part of a broader strategy by the ruling Zanu-PF to diminish the representation of opposition parties in both Parliament and local government authorities.
