Lawyer and opposition figure Fadzayi Mahere has revised her claim against author Petina Gappah from US$1 million to US$50,000 in their ongoing court battle.
Despite Gappah's recent retraction and apology, Mahere continues the case, alleging insincerity in Gappah's actions and persistence in defamatory allegations.
Mahere argues that Gappah's statements have harmed her reputation and family.
Gappah contends that Mahere introduced her father into the case, justifying her addressing related questions.
Mahere's lawyer objected to this assertion as irrelevant. Both parties presented their submissions before Justice Jacob Mafusire, who adjourned the matter indefinitely after granting the amendment and hearing from both sides.
Gappah is to submit her closing arguments by June 17, with Mahere following on July 2, 2024.
The lawsuit originated from allegations by Gappah that Mahere sought academic favors and made personal advances.
