The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of 24-year-old Kelvin Chisandako in connection with the theft of USD 20,000 from a cash-in-transit vehicle on October 16, 2024. The cash, belonging to a private security company, was stolen during a transport route from Beitbridge to Mutare.
Following investigative leads, police apprehended Chisandako on November 3 in Mangwawo Village, Mavvarire, Mwenezi, after receiving reports that he was in possession of unusually large amounts of cash. During questioning, Chisandako admitted to the theft, stating that he had boarded the cash-in-transit vehicle at Lutumba Business Centre in Beitbridge.
The arrest led to the recovery of USD 600, ZAR 2,320, an empty cash box, and a Toyota Aqua vehicle (registration number AGO 5702) which Chisandako had purchased for USD 9,800. Police investigations further revealed that he had used part of the stolen funds to acquire construction materials, including 30 twelve-foot roofing sheets, 35 fifty-kilogram bags of cement, seven window frames, two French doors, 15,000 farm bricks, a cellphone, and three men's suits.
The ZRP praised the public for providing critical information that led to the arrest and encouraged continued cooperation with law enforcement. The police reminded citizens to report any criminal activities to the National Complaints Desk at (0242) 703631, via WhatsApp at 0712 800 197, or by contacting their nearest police station.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police will ensure that the law takes its course on all criminals without fear or favor," the ZRP said in a statement.
