A man from Old Lobengula in Bulawayo tragically took his own life on Tuesday morning after reportedly finding his wife in a compromising situation with another man upon returning home from work.
The deceased, identified as 47-year-old Nqobile Sibanda, was discovered hanging from a tree near Nyamande Primary School early on November 5, following a night of tension with his wife. Bulawayo provincial police deputy spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident, revealing that the dispute began late on November 4 when Sibanda arrived home around 10 pm and confronted his wife.
"On November 4 at around 10 pm, the now-deceased came home from work and had an argument with his wife. He then took a black satchel, scaled a perimeter wall, and left around 4:40 am on November 5," Msebele said. "The wife was later awakened by a neighbor who informed her of the discovery of Sibanda's body hanging from a tree."
A close resident of the area, who preferred to remain anonymous, suggested that the suicide was prompted by Sibanda discovering his wife in bed with another man. The altercation reportedly escalated when the wife disclosed that Sibanda was not the biological father of their five-month-old child.
"An argument ensued, and the wife told Sibanda that he was not the biological father of their child. Sibanda, devastated by the revelation, told her that he would commit suicide, first by ingesting rat poison, and if that failed, he would hang himself," the resident explained.
Before his death, Sibanda reportedly contacted his brother in Cowdray Park, requesting that he look after his biological child, who is currently in primary school.
Assistant Inspector Msebele, in light of the tragic incident, urged members of the community to seek support from trusted friends, relatives, or professionals when dealing with personal issues. "We encourage people to talk to relatives, churchmates, or community liaison officers if they are struggling with emotional or psychological distress to prevent such unfortunate incidents," Msebele said.
The incident has raised awareness about the importance of mental health support and seeking help in times of crisis. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
