3 hrs ago | Views
A 56-year-old member of the neighbourhood watch committee in Hurungwe, Mashonaland West, has been sentenced to three months in prison after he was found guilty of releasing two detained suspects and demanding a bribe.
Stephen Chivafa, who was tasked with assisting local law enforcement in maintaining security, was convicted for his actions at the Kapfunde Police Post. On May 11, at around 12 a.m., Chivafa unlawfully released two individuals who had been arrested on theft charges. After freeing the suspects, he demanded a bribe of US$10 in exchange for their continued freedom.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) issued a statement via X (formerly Twitter) confirming the details of the case. According to the NPAZ, Chivafa's actions were both criminal and a breach of the trust placed in him as a member of the neighbourhood watch committee.
Chivafa's actions have raised concerns about corruption within community security structures, which are meant to complement law enforcement agencies, not undermine them. The sentencing highlights the ongoing efforts by authorities to tackle corruption and ensure that those in positions of trust are held accountable for their actions.
Chivafa has been sentenced to three months in prison, with the sentence emphasizing the seriousness of his misconduct. His actions have brought disrepute to the neighbourhood watch committee and serve as a reminder of the importance of integrity within community security roles.
