Bulawayo socialite deemed an extreme flight risk, denied bail
3 hrs ago | Views
A Bulawayo magistrate has denied bail for car dealer and socialite Brighton Chipunza, popularly known as "Dash," citing concerns that he is a potential flight risk and could interfere with witnesses.
Chipunza was arrested last Friday for allegedly stealing a South African-registered Toyota Fortuner from a car wash on the outskirts of Bulawayo's city center.
During court proceedings on Wednesday, Chipunza reportedly threatened the complainant, warning her to "watch her back." He also insulted journalists covering the case, further raising concerns about his behavior.
Public Interest in the Case
The case has drawn significant public attention, with many speculating about potential links to broader criminal networks operating in the area. The alleged theft of a luxury vehicle has also fueled discussions about the safety of car wash facilities and the growing problem of vehicle-related crimes in Bulawayo.
Regional magistrate Mrs. Benhilda Chiundura presided over the hearing and ruled that no bail conditions could reasonably ensure Chipunza would not interfere with witnesses or evade trial.
Chipunza has been remanded in custody until December 11, pending further investigations.
The case continues to unfold, with observers closely monitoring developments as authorities seek to address growing concerns over organized crime and public safety in the city.
