Eight former legislators have been shortlisted for public interviews for the position of commissioners at the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), following the expiry of the terms of office for all sitting commissioners.

In a statement, the Parliament of Zimbabwe announced that Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, had informed the House of the vacancies at ZACC. As per Section 237(1) of the Constitution, the Parliamentary Committee on Standing Rules and Orders (CSRO) invited the public to submit nominations for potential appointees to the commission.

The Parliament received a total of 145 nominations, consisting of 112 males and 33 females. The CSRO then convened and shortlisted suitable candidates for possible appointment to the commission. A total of 47 candidates have been invited to attend public interviews on December 19 this year.

Among the eight former legislators shortlisted for interviews are:

    Anele Ndebele (Magwegwe)
    Chido Madiwa (Proportional Representation)
    Zalerah Makari (Epworth)
    Justice Major Wadyajena (Gokwe-Nembudziya)
    Tongai Matutu (Masvingo)
    Berita Chikwama (Gutu East)
    Last Chigavazira (Chegutu West)
    Kindness Paradza (Makonde)

In addition to the former lawmakers, the list also includes former ZACC commissioners Gabriel Chaibva and Thandiwe Thando Mlobane, as well as human rights activist and lawyer Wilbert Mandinde. Former top police officer Resistant Ncube and former Zimbabwe Electoral Commissioner Qhubani Moyo are also among those shortlisted. Former Manicaland Senator Dorothy Mabika and economist Albert Makochekanwa are in the running as well.

Notably, Tongai Matutu, Brian Kashangura, and Retired Major Michael Dennis Santu, who had previously attempted to secure positions in 2019, are making another bid for ZACC commissioner roles.

The public interviews are part of the process to select individuals who will serve on the commission, which plays a critical role in Zimbabwe's fight against corruption.
