With the new school term set to begin next Tuesday, parents and guardians are grappling with rising costs for uniforms and stationery, turning the annual back-to-school preparations into a financial challenge.

Harare's Central Business District was abuzz yesterday as families scrambled to make last-minute purchases, hunting for the best deals in a market marked by a sudden price surge.

A survey by The Herald revealed that many parents were moving from one retailer to another in search of affordable options, navigating what has become a financial marathon.

Harare resident Ms. Maldred Matambanadzo highlighted the recent spike in prices, saying costs had climbed significantly in just a month.

"Retail prices were stable recently in the Central Business District, but now many stationery items have become more expensive, especially uniforms," she said.

She noted that the price of a rim of bond paper had risen from $3 to $4, further burdening families preparing for the term. Matambanadzo emphasized the importance of comparing prices to avoid overcharging amid rising demand.

Retailers are adapting to the increased foot traffic, with some extending their working hours to accommodate customers.

"We now open at 5am and close at 6.30pm to ensure our customers can get the supplies they need on time," said Mr. Tapiwanashe Chinyanga, a retailer from Kaylar Closet.

Stationery retailer Ms. Sharon Chigayo of Passion Stationery also reported a boost in sales, attributing it to heightened demand for new school supplies.

"Our sales this year have been higher than last year, suggesting that customers are more interested in buying new school supplies and accessories," she said.

The rising interest in fresh start-of-term merchandise reflects a commitment by parents to equip their children for success, with many prioritizing new book collections, pens, and pencils despite the financial strain.

The increase in back-to-school spending underscores the challenges families face in balancing financial constraints with the desire to provide quality education. Parents continue to display resilience, navigating Harare's bustling shopping scene in pursuit of affordability and value.

As the school bell rings next week, students will head into classrooms equipped with the essentials, thanks to the determination and sacrifices of their parents and guardians.
