Bulawayo's political landscape was alight in 2024, with six Members of Parliament shining brightly for their transformative and relentless efforts to uplift their constituencies. Using a sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) data analytics tool, these MPs were recognized not in any particular order but for their outstanding initiatives across Bulawayo Province. Their commendable work, funded from their personal pockets and contributions from friends of the constituencies, has set a benchmark for service excellence in both community development and legislative leadership.

Hon. Desire Moyo (Nkulumane Constituency)

Hon. Moyo redefined what it means to serve a community with a hands-on and holistic approach. Early in the year, he crafted a detailed constituency development plan and strategically formed clusters of representatives to spearhead developmental activities. In May, he officially launched this plan alongside the Constituency Development Committee, the Nkulumane CDF Committee, and a Compassion and Comfort Team, creating a robust foundation for progress.

Hon. Moyo conducted an exhaustive constituency tour, visiting all schools, two clinics, police stations, and crime-prone areas, ensuring that every concern was documented for future action. In August, he celebrated his first year in office with a vibrant community event that showcased his achievements and set the tone for continued success. In October, he personally engaged with O and A-Level candidates from Nkulumane High School and Jubilee Academy, inspiring and motivating them to excel academically.

He also extended a helping hand to Mtshane Primary School with a donation of cement and renovated a burnt house near Mafela Primary School, exemplifying his commitment to improving the community's infrastructure. Hon. Moyo tackled the drug and substance abuse crisis through a youth-targeted campaign, while his partnership with Victory Siyanqoba Trust led to the training of 50 climate change champions.

His Compassion Team stood out as an extraordinary support structure, attending over 146 funerals to provide solace to grieving families. On the legislative front, Hon. Moyo advocated for the completion of infrastructure projects in Matabeleland, championed an inclusive approach to the Gukurahundi national healing process, and called for the erection of statues honoring King Lobhengula and Queen Lozikeyi in Parliament.

Hon. Discent Bajila (Emakhandeni–Luveve Constituency)

Hon. Bajila emerged as a trailblazer for innovation and community empowerment. He facilitated the construction of a Waste Assortment Center by providing cement and revived a vandalized borehole in New Lobengula, ensuring sustainable water access. His annual sports tournament became a hallmark event, bringing youth together through football and netball while promoting unity and health.

His entrepreneurial vision led to the creation of "EL Glow" petroleum jelly, a homemade product symbolizing the industrious spirit of Emakhandeni and Luveve. Hon. Bajila provided chess equipment to schools, conducted four feedback meetings to maintain open communication with residents, and supported local athletes representing the constituency at national and international levels.

In Parliament, he gained acclaim for moving a motion promoting marginalized languages, which united MPs across the political spectrum. His relentless advocacy held the government accountable for critical issues such as education under the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM), road maintenance in Matabeleland, and tax policies.

Hon. Tendai Nyathi (Lobengula-Magwegwe Constituency)

Hon. Nyathi's work resonated deeply with his constituents as he tackled pressing social issues head-on. He renovated a home destroyed by fire and provided monthly grocery donations to the elderly, embodying compassion in leadership. Hon. Nyathi funded the acquisition of stolen electricity wires and contributed towards the installation of streetlights in Ward 18 to reduce nighttime crime.

In education, he celebrated the achievements of top-performing students at Mawaba Primary School with gifts and scholarships. His significant contribution to acquiring community stands in Mountain View and Magwegwe West demonstrated his dedication to creating spaces for collective growth and development.

Hon. Minenhle Gumede (Bulawayo North Constituency)

Hon. Gumede's advocacy in Parliament gained national attention. Her leadership was instrumental in pushing for a mobile registration program for essential documents like birth certificates and IDs, ensuring that no citizen was left behind. She also championed the abolition of the death penalty, a motion that received overwhelming support and was signed into law by the President.

Hon. Gumede was a tireless advocate against drug and substance abuse, actively working with community stakeholders to address this crisis. As Chairperson of the Higher and Tertiary Education Parliamentary Portfolio Committee, she visited nearly all technical colleges and universities nationwide, addressing sexual harassment policies and promoting a conducive learning environment for students.

Her insightful questioning of government policies, such as the Work for Fees Program and ZETDC's compensation framework for individuals, showcased her commitment to transparency and accountability.

Hon. Joseph Tshuma (Pelandaba-Tshabalala Constituency)

Hon. Tshuma's voice reverberated in Parliament as he championed the completion of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam, a transformative project poised to revolutionize agriculture in Matabeleland. He also tackled issues affecting urban communities, calling out funeral parlours for exploitative practices and urging regulatory reforms.

His criticism of ZINWA for failing to deliver functional boreholes highlighted his determination to ensure basic services for his constituents. Hon. Tshuma's work underscored the need for sustainable and effective solutions to longstanding challenges.

Hon. Sichelesile Mahlangu (Pumula Constituency)

Hon. Mahlangu was a formidable force in Parliament, playing a key role in declaring the El Niño drought a national disaster and advocating for mobile registration projects. She supported the abolishment of the death penalty and backed motions promoting local languages in schools.

In her constituency, she provided financial support for underprivileged children's school fees and examination costs, ensuring that education remained accessible. Hon. Mahlangu collaborated with the Resident Minister of Bulawayo to secure scholarships for deserving students, while her health kiosk and anti-drug campaigns brought vital services and awareness to the community.

These six MPs exemplified excellence, going above and beyond their mandates to serve their communities with passion and ingenuity. Their dedication has not only elevated Bulawayo's standards of governance but also provided a roadmap for effective, people-centered leadership.
