Police have launched a nationwide manhunt for motorists involved in three separate fatal hit-and-run accidents that occurred over the weekend, leaving three people dead.
In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragic incidents, which took place on May 2 and May 3, 2025. He urged all motorists to uphold the law and show responsibility in the event of road traffic accidents.
"The ZRP reiterates that motorists should stop, render assistance to victims if necessary, and report all accidents to the police within 24 hours," said Commissioner Nyathi. "We are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of the motorists involved in these fatal accidents."
The first fatal hit-and-run occurred on May 2 at the 102-kilometre peg along the Harare-Mutare Road in Marondera. An unknown vehicle struck an 81-year-old woman, who died on the spot. The motorist failed to stop or report the accident.
On May 3, a 30-year-old man was killed in a similar incident along the Harare-Bulawayo Road at the 384km peg in Mbembesi. The unidentified motorist also fled the scene after the collision.
Later that same day, another pedestrian was fatally hit near the 254km peg along the Harare-Mutare Road, near the Penhalonga turn-off. The vehicle involved in the accident remains unknown, and the driver did not stop after the collision.
Police are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed any of the incidents or who have information that could assist in identifying the vehicles or suspects to come forward.
"These accidents are not just tragic - they are criminal," said Commissioner Nyathi. "The law will take its course, and we urge all drivers to respect human life and abide by road traffic regulations."
The police have intensified patrols and are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby areas in a bid to track down the culprits.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact their nearest police station or call the national police hotline.
