The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has launched public interviews to fill eight vacant positions on the Labour Court bench, as part of a broader initiative to improve the efficiency of Zimbabwe's justice system and speed up the resolution of labour disputes.

The interviews, held in Harare, are being conducted in accordance with constitutional mandates ensuring transparency and merit-based judicial appointments.

Chief Justice Luke Malaba, who also chairs the panel assessing the candidates, is expected to deliver the keynote address officially opening the proceedings. The panel's focus is on evaluating candidates' knowledge of labour law and their understanding of the Labour Court's role in protecting the rights of both workers and employers.

Thirteen candidates have been shortlisted for the interviews. They include Innocent Bepura, Chipo Ruwhaya, Estere Chivasa, Martin Ray Gapara, Tinevimbo Gatawa, Evidence Gonesi, Mary Grace Nyarai Hare, Thompson Hove, Motion Jaravani, Naison Machingauta, Bianca Makwande, Taurai Manwere, and Edward Mapara.

The Labour Court, established under the Labour Act [Chapter 28:01], is crucial for resolving labour disputes, promoting fair labour practices, and maintaining industrial harmony nationwide.

According to the JSC, appointing additional judges will bolster the judiciary's capacity to deliver timely and effective justice amid rising labour cases linked to economic challenges and industrial restructuring.

The successful candidates will be appointed by the President on the JSC's recommendation, in line with Section 179 of Zimbabwe's Constitution.
