The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed media reports claiming that senior officers have been stealing food rations meant for junior officers, describing the allegations as unverified and calling on anyone with credible evidence to personally approach the Commissioner-General of Police, Stephen Mutamba.

In a statement issued Tuesday, ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the police force has launched an internal investigation to verify the truthfulness of the reports carried in a local daily under the headline: "ZRP Bosses Steal Rations: Juniors."

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that the Commissioner-General of Police is not aware of the allegations. He is therefore frantically trying to ascertain the veracity of the allegations," Nyathi said.

He further invited whistleblowers and concerned officers with solid evidence to come forward and speak directly to Commissioner-General Mutamba at Police General Headquarters in Harare, assuring them of confidentiality.

"The ZRP guarantees the confidentiality and protection of anyone who wishes to volunteer credible and verifiable information to the Commissioner-General of Police," added Nyathi.

The statement follows mounting public concern and growing discontent within the lower ranks of the force, allegedly due to systemic abuse and diversion of welfare resources by those in senior positions.

While the police hierarchy has expressed concern over the reports, they maintain that no formal or verified complaints have been brought forward through official channels.

The investigation comes as the ZRP grapples with calls for greater accountability and improved conditions of service for junior officers.
