A Zvishavane man has been jailed for 18 months after he was convicted of attempting to defraud Ecosure Funeral Cover of US$6,250 by faking his daughter's death.
Promise Banda (40) appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Sengster Tavengwa this week facing fraud charges. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment, with four months suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
According to court records, Banda misrepresented to Ecosure, a subsidiary of Econet Wireless, that his daughter, Chipo Enia Banda, had died on July 29. He allegedly forged a Child Health Card by altering details to create a fictitious dependent and went on to secure a burial order, number 526/25, from the Zvishavane District Registrar's office.
He then used the forged documents to lodge an online claim with Ecosure in a bid to receive US$6,250 in death benefits.
However, Ecosure officials uncovered that the claimed beneficiary did not exist, leading to police involvement. Banda was arrested and charged with fraud.
