A 23-year-old student nurse at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo has been arrested for allegedly using a fraudulent academic certificate to gain admission to the nursing school.
Thelma Gurupira, from Mbare, Harare, is accused of presenting a fake Zimbabwe Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) certificate indicating she had passed her exams. She initially appeared in court on Thursday facing fraud and forgery charges and was remanded in custody until September 29 for a bail application.
On Monday, Gurupira appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba, represented by lawyer Tanaka Muganyi, and was granted bail.
Prosecutor Sibusisiwe Sithole told the court that Gurupira applied to Mpilo School of Nursing in 2017, fully aware that she did not meet the required passes. She allegedly submitted a forged ZIMSEC certificate claiming six passes in the November 2017 examinations, despite lacking the necessary qualifications.
"Mpilo School of Nursing acted upon the tendered fake document and enrolled the accused person as a student nurse where she trained from 12 September 2022 to 11 September 2025," Sithole stated.
The arrest follows a similar case last week involving another 25-year-old student nurse from Murehwa, who also allegedly used a fraudulent certificate to gain admission at Mpilo.
This incident adds to a string of fraud-related cases at Mpilo Central Hospital this year. In June, a 27-year-old man was jailed for seven years for impersonating a qualified medical doctor at the facility.
