Two men from Chinhoyi have each been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of rape in separate cases involving minors.
In the first case, a 30-year-old man pleaded not guilty to charges of raping his niece when he appeared before the Chinhoyi Magistrates' Court. Despite his plea, he was convicted and sentenced to 20 years behind bars.
The court heard that on July 14, the man - identified as the younger brother of the victim's father - was left in charge of the child while her parents worked in the fields. He took advantage of their absence, lured the toddler into his room, and raped her once.
The crime came to light later that day when the child's mother noticed signs of pain while bathing her daughter. Upon questioning, the young victim disclosed what had happened, leading to the uncle's arrest.
In the second case, a 44-year-old man was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a 14-year-old mentally challenged girl.
The offence occurred in the early hours of June 4 at Gweru Farm. The court heard that the man broke into the victim's home, where she and her younger sister were alone, and raped the girl once.
The younger sister, alerted by noises, discovered the assault in progress. The offender fled the scene after violently pushing her aside.
At 6 a.m. the following morning, the victim's father returned home and, upon hearing the account, reported the matter to police. The man was later arrested.
These heartbreaking cases serve as a stark reminder that child sexual abuse often occurs at the hands of people known and trusted by the victims. Parents and guardians are urged to remain vigilant, educate children about personal safety, and report any signs of abuse immediately.
