Two women, including Sekai Vumbunu, sister to the notorious "terror twins" Elijah and Abraham Vumbunu, have appeared in court facing robbery charges involving US$36 000. Florence Chisiri was also charged alongside her.
The duo appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Luke Ncube yesterday, facing two counts of robbery. They were remanded in custody to October 20. Their legal representation is provided by Tanyaradzwa Kahuni and Dominic Moyo of Tashaya Law Chambers.
Prosecutors allege that the women played a central role in a series of armed robberies and are part of a wider criminal network operating in Bulawayo. Both are reportedly illegal forex dealers, with one of their accomplices exposed during a botched operation.
The pair is accused of robbing Nkolozi Investments, a bureau de change at the CIPF Building, where they allegedly posed as clients before making off with US$18 000 and R151 000 in an early-morning raid last month. They are also linked to another incident on August 10 at a Fife Street restaurant, where they reportedly stole US$4 000 and R60 000 from a patron.
Two other suspects, Nehemiah Dladla (38) and Simon Dube (28), were arrested in connection with the robberies. Dladla was apprehended in Mbundane following a high-speed police chase, leading to Dube's arrest near Nketa 6 Service Station. Both later implicated Sekai Vumbunu, prompting her arrest.
The arrests have reignited public interest in the Vumbunu crime family, which first gained national infamy following the US$4 million Ecobank heist in October last year. The "terror twins," raised in a polygamous household in Mzilikazi suburb, have a long history of organised crime, including carjackings, gold heists, and violent home invasions.
Abraham Vumbunu, recently released from a 14-year prison sentence, allegedly rejoined his brother in planning the Ecobank heist shortly after his release. The operation, described as carried out with "movie-style precision," involved six armed men overpowering Safeguard security guards and making off with cash trunks along 9th Avenue.
The twins were later arrested in South Africa in a joint operation between the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) and are currently awaiting extradition.
The recent arrests underline the ongoing concern over organised crime networks in Bulawayo and the wider Midlands region, with law enforcement continuing to pursue members of the Vumbunu family and their associates.
