Villagers in Matsamba under Chief Nyakunhuwa were left in shock after a 49-year-old man allegedly took his own life by stabbing himself in the neck with an okapi knife following a domestic dispute with his estranged wife.
The incident occurred on October 8 at around 5:15 PM, when Phillip Zinjeke reportedly visited his mother-in-law's homestead demanding the return of his wife, Edith Gwezuva (41).
According to ZRP Masvingo Province acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, Zinjeke arrived at the homestead holding an open okapi knife, which he pressed against his neck — a gesture that immediately alarmed his mother-in-law.
"Out of fear, she fled to a neighbour's home to seek help. When they returned, they found Zinjeke lying in a pool of blood with a deep wound to the neck. The okapi knife was beside him," said Assistant Inspector Patinyu.
Police officers attended the scene and transported the body to Ndanga District Hospital for post-mortem, while investigations continue.
Preliminary findings suggest the incident may have been a suicide linked to emotional distress following marital separation.
"This tragic case adds to the growing number of suicide incidents being reported across the province. We urge communities to seek counselling and use peaceful means to resolve domestic disputes. There is no need for violence," Patinyu said.
He further encouraged those facing emotional or marital challenges to confide in trusted relatives, church leaders, or counsellors, emphasising the importance of mental health support and open dialogue in preventing such tragedies.
