A 27-year-old woman from Pumula North, Bulawayo, has been fined US$110 for assaulting her employer's three-year-old daughter several times on the back with a switch, claiming she was trying to teach the child how to communicate when she needed to use the toilet.
Rejoice Moyo pleaded guilty to a charge of ill-treatment of a child under the Children's Act when she appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube.
She was ordered to pay the fine by 21 November 2025, failing which she will serve two months in prison.
In mitigation, Moyo told the court that she had no intention of harming the child but was merely attempting to train her to alert adults when she needed to relieve herself.
Prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu told the court that the incident occurred on October 9 while the complainant's mother was away, having left the child in Moyo's care. During that time, Moyo struck the girl several times on the back with a switch.
The toddler sustained multiple bruises but did not receive medical attention. The matter was later reported to the police, leading to Moyo's arrest.
