A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer has appeared in court facing charges of criminal abuse of office after he allegedly sold more than 30 sets of police uniforms - a serious violation of police regulations and state property laws.

The officer, Muteswa Shamain Dzingai, who is employed by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa yesterday.

He was released on US$200 bail and remanded to November 25 pending further investigations.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, represented by Mr Christopher Lloyd Tarenyika, is listed as the complainant in the case.

According to the State, represented by prosecutor Mr Rufaro Chonzi, the alleged offence occurred in early September 2025, when another police officer, Justice Chasiya, stationed at the Police Band, approached Dzingai seeking assistance in acquiring police uniforms.

Chasiya allegedly requested 40 riot trousers, 50 Special Tactics Unit (STU) caps, and 20 grey shirts.

Dzingai is accused of supplying the uniforms and receiving US$1 000 as payment. Chasiya then reportedly resold the uniforms to other officers.

The sale and distribution of police uniforms without authorisation is strictly prohibited, as such items are classified as state-issued property and are not for commercial trade.

Prosecutors argued that Dzingai's actions constituted a clear abuse of his office and were inconsistent with his duties as a public officer entrusted with enforcing the law.

The matter came to light on October 23, when Chasiya was arrested for the illegal sale of police uniforms. During questioning, he allegedly implicated Dzingai, leading to the latter's arrest.

Investigations are ongoing.
