Mkoba South legislator John Kuka has raised concerns in Parliament over the state of rural bridges, many of which were destroyed by rains last season and have remained unrepaired for decades. Some, he noted, have gone as long as 20 years without reconstruction.
Addressing Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona, Kuka urged the government to prioritize bridge rehabilitation to ensure safe and direct passage for rural communities.
Minister Mhona acknowledged the issue, stating that many bridges were damaged during past cyclones and remain unattended. He emphasized that Phase Two of the national rehabilitation programme aims to construct more durable bridges, but budget constraints and logistical challenges limit the pace of progress.
Mhona encouraged MPs to identify specific bridges needing urgent attention so that road authorities and local councils can coordinate repairs. “We cannot do all these bridges at the same time,” he said, “but with proper budgeting and collaboration, we can begin to address them."
