The government has acknowledged growing concerns over widespread land degradation caused by illegal mining activities across Zimbabwe, with Citizens Coalition for Change legislator Joanah Mamombe urging the Ministry of Mines to conduct a nationwide environmental audit.
Speaking in Parliament, Mamombe cited severe degradation in areas such as Penhalonga, Mazowe, and Bindura, questioning whether the Ministry was tracking the environmental impact of both legal and illegal mining operations.
"Some of these miners have environmental impact assessments, but is the Government considering a comprehensive audit of the damage already done?" Mamombe asked.
Deputy Minister of Mines Polite Kambamura responded that a previous audit had been conducted using a whole-of-government approach. He revealed that a new *Responsible Mining Initiative* will be launched before year-end, led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, to periodically audit mining operations and enforce compliance.
"Those found violating environmental laws - whether locals or foreign investors - will face the full wrath of the law, including cancellation of mining titles," Kambamura said.
He added that the Ministry is considering introducing environmental insurance, requiring all title holders to contribute toward rehabilitation funds in case of default.
The initiative aims to curb illegal mining, promote sustainable practices, and hold operators accountable for environmental damage.
