Flash floods triggered by heavy rains tore through Phakama suburb in Gwanda, Matabeleland South Province, on Wednesday, destroying homes and leaving distraught residents battling to save what they could from the raging waters.
Scenes of panic unfolded as families rushed to higher ground. In one of the most dramatic moments, a woman dressed in dark blue was seen frantically calling the fire brigade for help after water gushed into her home, trapping her children inside.
"All my furniture and electronics are gone," she said, trembling as she surveyed the wreckage.
Another resident described how the floods came with alarming force. "The wall just fell down, and the water rushed in," he said. "It came into my house and destroyed everything — my TV, fridge, and furniture."
Community members have since come together to assist affected families, offering temporary shelter, food, and emotional support.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during the ongoing rains and said assessments will be conducted to determine the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to those affected.
The disaster has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved drainage infrastructure and disaster preparedness in flood-prone communities across the country.
