More than 480 inmates were released yesterday from Harare Central Prison after benefiting from a Presidential Clemency granted by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, with many expressing gratitude for what they described as a life-changing second chance.

The prison's high walls echoed with whistles, ululation and song as 484 inmates celebrated their release, chanting messages of appreciation for the Head of State.

"VaMnangagwa huchi. Murichibaba, munerudo. Tinotenda nekutipa umwe mukana," they sang, thanking the President for the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Spencer Chaparapadza, who had been serving a 48-month sentence for gender-based violence and was released after serving 21 months, said he deeply regretted his actions and urged men to abandon abusive behaviour.

"I want to thank our President for this early release, allowing me a chance to rebuild my life for my family and my country," he said. "We must respect our wives, and to all men out there, please stop domestic violence."

Brian Muzondiwa, whose sentence for unlawful entry was shortened, said his time in prison had helped him grow spiritually and gain practical skills for reintegration.

"I have learned to pray and become a true worshipper. I urge everyone to be God-fearing. I am grateful to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services for preparing me for life outside," he said.

Chandafira Chigo, who served nine months for assault, described the clemency as the beginning of a new chapter.

"We are immensely thankful for what our father and President has done for us. This marks a new life for me, and I believe society will accept my reintegration. The skills I acquired through rehabilitation programmes will guide me in living peacefully among my fellow citizens," he said.

The release programme is being carried out in phases, with a further 66 inmates expected to be freed soon.

Across the country, prisons in Harare Metropolitan Province released 960 inmates, Bulawayo Metropolitan freed 392, Masvingo 384 and Midlands 501, contributing to a national total of 4 305 inmates released under the clemency order, which shortens sentences for selected offences.
