A Bindura‑based MetroPeach cashier has been jailed after stealing US$49,000 from his employer and blowing the money on betting.

Peter Muza was sentenced to eight years in prison by Bindura magistrate Rumbidzai Kabasa.

Prosecutor Carson Kundiona told the court that sometime in August 2024, Muza began inflating the values of cash deposits he made on behalf of the company, pocketing the difference. He also created fictitious transactions to make it appear as if he had deposited money when no such deposits had been made.

The offence came to light during an internal audit, which revealed discrepancies between cash collection vouchers, bank deposit slips and supplier confirmation statements compared to what Muza had declared.

Muza was arrested after the audit exposed the fraud, and the court heard that all the stolen funds had been lost through betting.

The case adds to growing concerns over gambling‑related financial crimes, an issue widely discussed across platforms such as Zimbabwe betting and fraud cases.
