The late Brigadier General (Retired) Donald Silundi Tshuma has been declared a national hero in recognition of his service to Zimbabwe during the liberation struggle and his long military career after independence.
The announcement was delivered to the Tshuma family in Bulawayo on Thursday evening by Bulawayo Metropolitan Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Judith Ncube, who said the decision was made in honour of his sacrifice and dedication to the nation.
"The government and President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa have seen it worthy to accord national hero status. His works speak for him," she said.
Brigadier General (Rtd) Tshuma will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on a date yet to be announced.
The former army officer is remembered for his service in the liberation war and his continued contribution to the Zimbabwe National Army after independence, where he rose through the ranks to the position of Brigadier General.
Officials said he was known for his principled leadership, extensive military experience and commitment to both national defence and development.
The Tshuma family expressed gratitude to government for the honour, describing it as a fitting tribute to his legacy.
Brigadier General (Rtd) Tshuma died on May 15 at his home in Nkulumane, Bulawayo.
He is survived by four children.
The conferment adds to the list of liberation war veterans and senior military figures who have been accorded national hero status in recognition of their roles in shaping Zimbabwe's independence and post-independence security establishment.
