The City of Harare has urged residents in Mabelreign suburb to observe strict safety precautions as chemical rock blasting operations commence today under an ongoing water infrastructure upgrade programme.
The blasting works, scheduled to continue until Monday next week, will take place at the intersection of Westminster Avenue and Ridgeview Drive as part of a water pipe replacement project being undertaken by the City of Harare in partnership with Helcraw Water.
In a public notice, Acting Town Clerk Advocate Warren Chiwawa said the project is intended to improve water infrastructure and enhance service delivery to residents in the area.
He called on members of the public to cooperate with project teams and comply with all safety measures during the duration of the works.
"Residents are strongly advised not to go beyond barricaded areas, to keep a minimum distance of 15 to 30 metres from the drilling and blasting site, and to follow all barricades, signage and instructions from site personnel," the notice stated.
The city also cautioned residents against interfering with equipment or entering designated work zones.
"Residents should not touch, tamper with or enter areas with drilled or filled holes and equipment, as the chemical used is caustic and may cause burns," said Advocate Chiwawa.
Parents and guardians have been specifically urged to ensure that children stay away from the construction site at all times to avoid accidents or injuries.
According to the City of Harare, the project forms part of wider efforts to modernise ageing water infrastructure and improve the reliability and efficiency of water supply systems across the capital.
Municipal authorities said while the works may cause temporary inconvenience to residents, the upgrades are expected to deliver long-term benefits through improved water service delivery.
The city appealed for patience, cooperation and adherence to all safety instructions throughout the blasting period to ensure the project is completed without incident.
