BULAWAYO –- Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has urged SADC member states to liberalise air services and invest in AI‑enabled, climate‑resilient infrastructure, saying the region must modernise its transport systems to accelerate integration and sustainable development.
Addressing the SADC High‑Level Ministerial Round Table Dialogue at the ZITF Grounds in Bulawayo, Mhona said efficient transport networks, digital infrastructure and emerging technologies were now "essential enablers of sustainable development and economic competitiveness".
He said the dialogue, held under the theme "Liberalised Skies and AI‑Enabled Climate‑Resilient Infrastructure to Accelerate Regional Integration and Sustainable Development in SADC", came at a critical moment as the region pursues deeper economic integration.
Mhona reaffirmed Zimbabwe's commitment to the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), describing it as a flagship initiative capable of transforming aviation across Africa.
"Through the liberalisation of air services, we can improve connectivity, facilitate trade and tourism, reduce the cost of travel and create new opportunities for investment and growth," he said.
He said Zimbabwe continues to implement SAATM principles, invest in aviation infrastructure and support seamless regional connectivity, urging SADC states to remove barriers restricting the movement of people, goods and services.
On climate resilience, Mhona said the increasing frequency of extreme weather events demands infrastructure that is "resilient, adaptive and future‑ready".
"By harnessing artificial intelligence, digital technologies and advanced meteorological systems, we can improve forecasting, strengthen disaster preparedness and enhance the safety and efficiency of our transport networks," he said.
He encouraged delegates to use the platform to share experiences and develop practical solutions that advance regional integration and improve citizens' lives.
The dialogue brought together transport and infrastructure ministers to align policy on air transport liberalisation and climate‑smart infrastructure ahead of key SADC milestones.
