Two Harare boys drowned on Sunday morning while swimming in a dam at Eyecourt Farm in Waterfalls.
The two, Osama Raymond (12) and Ashley Tafadzwa (13) were on their way to church when
the incident occurred at around 9am at Super Sands dam.
Acting Harare provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tarirai Dube on Monday confirmed the deaths and said the two were in the company of a friend Dio Dio (age not given).
"On their way to a church service, it is reported that the two decided to swim while their friend refused and stood watch. After a few minutes, the two drowned," she said.
She said Dio then sought help from two men who were passing by and they retrieved the boys before taking them to Chitungwiza Central Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
A report was made to the police and the bodies were taken to the hospital's mortuary for post mortem.
Asst Insp Dube urged people especially children to desist from swimming in dams as they risked losing their lives. She also urged parents and guardians to ensure that they safeguard their children's lives.
A number of drowning cases of minors have been reported in various parts of the country in recent days in different situations, with experts blaming the tragedies on recent rains.
In January, 10 people drowned in various parts of Masvingo in two weeks forcing police to launch awareness campaigns to warn villagers on threats posed by flooded rivers.
