A 41-year-old Nyamweda bus driver, Gift Mapfumo of Tynwald South was last week brought before the Kwekwe Magistrates' Court facing charges of kidnapping two police officers.
Mapfumo was arrested on the 3rd of May at a roadblock in Chegutu after allegedly driving away with two police officers who had arrested him at a service station in Kwekwe for dangerous parking and dropping off passengers at an undesignated point.
The State alleges that Mapfumo, who was driving the Harare-bound bus was arrested at Total Service Station in Chegutu and ordered to drive the bus to Kwekwe Central Police Station to be formally charged.
The two arresting officers, Patrick Njanji and Constable Kudakwashe Chekeya, got onto the bus and ordered Mapfumo to drive to the police station.
It is alleged that instead he drove towards Harare.
The State further alleges that when the bus got to Muzvezve tollgate, 10km before Kadoma, Njanji jumped off the bus with the intention of getting help from officers at the tollgate, but before he could get help the bus pulled away with Chekeya on it.
The bus was only stopped at a roadblock in Chegutu after officers manning it had been alerted of the kidnapping. Mapfumo was then arrested.
He was remanded in custody to May 19.
Mapfumo has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
