The late liberation icon and ZANU founder, Enos Nkala has been laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
As early as 8am, Mbare residents had already lined up the streets leading to Stodart Hall, the traditional stop over before the National Heroes Acre, to give a befitting send off to a veteran nationalist, Nkala.
Hundreds of people who had gathered at the hall sang and danced, and just outside the hall, members of the Mbare Chimurenga Choir were belting out revolutionary songs, reflecting the critical role played by Nkala and many other gallant sons and daughters of the soil in executing the liberation war.
Youths were toyi-toying to give a befitting send off to a fighter who is credited for mobilising youths to join the struggle through his insightful speeches during the Second Chimurenga.
The waiting crowd exploded into song on the arrival of the gun carriage with the body of the national hero, escorted by his widow Thandiwe and children.
Senior Zanu PF officials, senior government officials, Zanu PF politburo members and former Deputy Prime Minister, Professor Arthur Mutambara then started arriving for the proceedings followed by Zanu PF National Chairman, Simon Khaya Moyo and Vice President Joice Mujuru.
The Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe, accompanied by the First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe then arrived for the proceedings.
President Mugabe then led the body viewing procession, followed by Vice President Mujuru, Khaya Moyo, Professor Mutambara, Zanu PF Politburo members, service chiefs, legislators, the family and relatives before fellow Zimbabweans were given a chance to pay their final respects to the late gallant son of the soil.
The revolutionary Zanu PF party has described Nkala as a brave man who committed himself to ensuring the country was liberated from colonial rule.
Representing the government and Zanu PF during a church service which was held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair grounds in Bulawayo on Wednesday, Obert Mpofu said Nkala believed in total emancipation of the people as evidenced by his support of indigenisation and empowerment programmes.
