President Robert Mugabe's spokesperson, George Charamba, must resign over the Salarygate scandal ostensibly because he benefited through hefty payouts in the Premier Service Medical Aid Society (Psmas) benefits saga.

James Maridadi, an MDC MP, made the call during yesterday's ministers' question time. Maridadi asked Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa whether government was going to fire Charamba.

"In terms of good corporate governance, we have seen senior government officials including George Charamba receiving a hefty allowances of $100 000 for sitting in Psmas board and we recommend to you that he must resign," Maridadi said to applause from legislators.

"He was on radio and appeared in newspapers saying that he had wronged by receiving money for doing nothing at Psmas.

"The honourable thing for him is to resign or he can be fired by his principal."

Chinamasa rejected the call, saying the Psmas issue was still under government probe.

"The story of Psmas is not yet over," Chinamasa said.

"Investigations continue, and we shall issue a statement on it."

Charamba is a board member at Psmas and drew over $100 000 in sitting allowances last year alone.
