Simon Khaya Moyo, the former Zanu-PF national chairman, escaped the chop for his support for Joice Mujuru because his wife is close to Grace Mugabe, according to a senior party insider.
Khaya Moyo was allegedly fighting for Mujuru's camp ahead of the party's December congress and was set to be removed by Emmerson Mnangagwa, who emerged victorious. But Grace reportedly saved him by appealing to her husband to retain him in the new cabinet.
He lost the party chairmanship and his position as a senior minister, which was abolished at the congress, and is now the Zanu-PF secretary for information.
Khaya Moyo married Margaret Mhambi, a Bulawayo businesswoman said to be a long-time friend of Grace, in June 2013 after securing a divorce from his former wife, Sibonokuhle Getrude Ngwenya, whom he married in 1980, for alleged infidelity.
"As the Mnangagwa camp plotted to have SK (Khaya Moyo) completely removed from any senior position in the party, the former chairman pleaded with his wife to talk to Mai Mugabe.
"Margaret then approached Mai Mugabe who sweet talked the president to be lenient with SK, who was asked to spill the beans relating to how the Mujuru faction was working to control the Zanu-PF presidium," said a senior party member.
Khaya Moyo reportedly went and met Mugabe late at night sometime in November last year where he knelt before the party leader, wept and asked for forgiveness for siding with Mujuru. He is said to have produced a lengthy report which he handed over to Mugabe.
Khaya Moyo is also said to have revealed that Mujuru was working closely with Rugare Gumbo, former secretary for administration, Didymus Mutasa, who was in charge of party administration and Ray Kaukonde, who was then Mashonaland East provincial chief.
"SK told President Mugabe that he was misled by the Mujuru plotters and did not know that they were in fact planning to topple him. The president told him he was forgiven and dismissed him," said the source.
Khaya Moyo was not responding to calls and has told the media that he would only talk when his holiday ends.
The Mnangagwa faction managed to have nine out of the ten Zanu-PF provincial chairpersons removed for allegedly working with Mujuru, while numerous cabinet ministers were also thrown out.
