A SEXUALLY-STARVED Gutu woman in a polygamous marriage allegedly axed and seriously injured her husband's junior wife before committing suicide as they fought for the man's attention, police said.

Alice Makohomero, 35, of Takawira Village under Chief Munyikwa, was apparently overwhelmed by jealousy as she suspected that the junior wife was getting more pleasure in the bedroom.

Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa of Masvingo police said the incident occurred at around 11AM on Thursday.

"I can confirm receiving a report of sudden death by hanging. However, we're yet to gather information on what exactly transpired," said Asst Insp Dhewa.

Rafael Mutombwa, a relative, told The Chronicle how Makohomero struck the heavily-pregnant Teriza Mupfumirwa with an axe following a dispute centred on their husband, Cherechedzai Takawira, 41.

He said Makohomero accused Mupfumirwa of "monopolising" their husband, arguing that she was getting too much attention.

"On Thursday at around 11AM, Makohomero asked why Mupfumirwa woke up late yet she knew that it was her turn to do household chores. Mupfumirwa felt that Makohomera had no right to tell her what to do even if she was the senior wife," Mutumbwa said.

"Makohomero was incensed by the response. She also accused her co-wife of getting too much attention from their husband. Makohomero complained that ever since her husband married a second wife, she had been sexually starved."

He said Mupfumirwa argued that she deserved much attention because she was pregnant and more beautiful compared to the senior wife. Mutombwa said Mupfumirwa's words infuriated Makohomero leading to a fight.

"After realising that she was being overpowered by the eight-month-pregnant Mupfumirwa, Makohomero pulled an axe from a pile of firewood and struck her twice on the head. Mupfumirwa fell down, bleeding profusely until she became unconscious."

He said Makohomero panicked and took to her heels, disappearing into a nearby bush.

Mupfumirwa was rushed to Silveira Mission Hospital where she was referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.

"Her condition is critical," he said.

Mutombwa said Mupfumirwa had already been taken to hospital when the police arrived.

"A search party was arranged to look for Makohomero. She was found hanging from a tree, just a few metres from her homestead. She was buried on Saturday in the same village after postmortem was waived," he added.

Efforts to get a comment from the husband, Cherechedzai, were unsuccessful.
