Some Zimbabweans say 91-year old President Robert Mugabe should now retire due to his advanced age.

These remarks come at a time when thousands of people attended his lavish birthday party on Saturday in Victoria Falls, which featured wild game on the menu, including elephant, Cape buffalo, sable antelope and impala meat.

At least 50 cattle were also slaughtered for the party with the ruling Zanu-PF party saying most of the items were donated by well-wishers. An estimated $1 million was spent for the birthday party.

Mavambo Kusile Dawn party youth wing president, Stephen Sibanda, says Mr. Mugabe's lavish party shows that he is not concerned about the needs of Zimbabweans and therefore time has come for him to step down.

Several other Zimbabweans, who spoke to Studio 7, expressed the same sentiments, adding that Mr. Mugabe can't offer anything new for the country after almost failing to run the nation of 13 million people in the past 34 years.

But Zanu-PF activist and political commentator, Morris Ngwenya, says the president has a right to celebrate his birthday and rule Zimbabwe.

The president has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from British rule in 1980.
