A police officer based at Inyathi Police Station in Matabeleland North, has been arrested for allegedly driving using a fake licence.
Mkhokheli Nyoni allegedly crashed a police car into a tree at the station and was arrested by his colleagues who demanded to see his licence.
He allegedly produced a fake licence.
Nyoni appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze facing two counts of fraud.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to April 10. The prosecutor Nkathazo Dlodlo said Nyoni crashed the car on 1 February.
Nyoni told the court his licence was genuine as he had obtained from Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) in Harare.
"They don't give fake licences there. If mine is a fake, then the VID is to blame," Nyoni said.
Court papers show that records at the VID in Bulawayo revealed that the serial numbers on the driver's license Nyoni delivered had already been issued to one Madei Sibanda.
