TRYING to defend his cheating mother who had been confronted by her boyfriend's wife cost a Nyanga teenager his life after he was fatally stabbed by the enraged woman last Friday.

Tobias Dawanyi from Mapfurira Village under Chief Saunyama was stabbed with an Okapi knife by Caroline Toringa (33) after she found his mother - Loveness Mutsvairo - locked up with her husband Lazurus Majagada.

Allegations are that Caroline Toringa from Kanyuru Village arrived at Mutsvairo's homestead and knocked at the window to Tobias' room demanding to see her husband who was at the place.

Tobias then woke up his mother and told her of the impromptu visit by Caroline. His mother in turn woke up her boyfriend, who subsequently broke into a heated argument with his wife.

Tobias intervened and asked the quarrelling couple to leave and they left.

On their way home, Toringa lied to her husband that she was going to report him to the village head. She asked him to proceed home with their two-year-old child. She, however, went back to Mutsvairo's homestead armed with an axe.

When she got to the homestead, with an intention to strike her love rival with the axe, her son Tobias came to her rescue and dispossessed Toringa of the axe. He then hit her with a stick, but she later drew out an Okapi knife and stabbed him on the left shoulder, resulting in him bled profusely. Toringa ran away after realising that Tobias was lying unconscious.

Loveness later came to the scene in an attempt to stop the nasty fight and discovered that blood was gushing out from her son's chest. She tried to ferry him to the nearest hospital in a wheelbarrow, but it was too late.

She reported the incident at ZRP St Mary's Base. Detectives attended the scene and found out that Tobias' body had a deep cut on the left shoulder and another on the left arm.

An axe, an empty 375ml Fanta bottle and a stick about 90cm long were recovered from the scene.

Detectives, led by Inspector Edgar Mupemhi, tracked the accused to House Number 7,CD Compounds, Wattle Company in Selbourne where she had sort refuge at her aunt's place. She was subsequently arrested.
