The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has suspended its Director of Accommodation and Catering service for allegedly using Grace Mugabe‘s name to influence staff in her department to buy fresh vegetable products from a suspected business partner.
Sources at the higher learning institution told The Zimbabwean that the director, Joyce Munangwa was suspended last Friday with full pay on allegations of trying to arm twist the university's buyers to procure fresh vegetables from a supplier only identified as Rodney Dangarembizi.
Her official vehicle, a Mazda BT50 was immediately withdrawn following the suspension.
"Mai Munangwa introduced Dangarembizi to the university's catering staff as a representative from the first family‘s Mazowe farms. She openly told her subordinates in a meeting who included her two deputies, stores men and the university's buyer to consider buying various green vegetables and chickens from Dangarembizi" said a source in the university's human resources department who declined to be named for fear of victimization.
The source said Munangwa is facing corruption charges as well as abusing the name of the first family. She is also accused of using the university's pool vehicles without authority to ferry various building materials to Borrowdale where she is reportedly constructing a mansion.
A female lady who answered Munangwa's landline when The Zimbabwean tried to contact her for comment said" She is not at work. I do not know where she is" referring to Munangwa.
The lady refused to provide this reporter with Munangwa's cell phone numbers, insisting that she is not allowed to provide workmates's personal cell phone numbers to "strangers".
Munangwa's suspension follows another suspension of the university's senior official, Ngaatendwe Takawira for allegedly providing President Robert Mugabe with a small cap of knowledge during a recent graduation ceremony at the university.
Takawira who is the university's deputy registrar, (academic) has since filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court seeking the stay of a disciplinary hearing against her.
