A COMMUTER omnibus driver who collided with a motorcycle in President Robert Mugabe's motorcade on Friday last week has pleaded guilty to negligent driving.

President Mugabe was going to the Harare International Airport where he flew to Papua New Guinea for the Summit on African, Carribean and Pacific Group of States (ACP).

The accident happened near the intersection of Julius Nyerere Way and Kenneth Kaunda Avenue.

Chucks Mazanza, 25, of Unit B, Seke, Chitungwiza appeared before Harare magistrate Nomsa Sabarauta.

He pleaded guilty to five counts of negligent driving.

Prosecuting, Devotion Gwashavanhu Nyagano told the court that Mazanza is a holder of a class two driver's license.

On May 27 this year around 9AM, Mazanza was driving a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus registration number ADC 6766 along Seke Road.

He was travelling due north and on approaching the flyover near the intersection of Julius Nyerere Way and Kenneth Kaunda Avenue, Mazanza stopped.

He dropped off passengers and drove away in the middle of the road.

The court heard that he then collided with Munyaradzi Marimo's motorcycle registration number ZRP 240A.

Marimo was on State motorcade escort duties and was sounding a siren.

Marimo fell down and was injured on his right foot.

His motorcycle's handle bars were broken and its oil sump was damaged.

Mazanza's vehicle sustained a small dent on the right fender and its right corner lamp was broken.

Nyagano told the court that Mazanza was negligent when he failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to stop or act reasonably when a collision was imminent and failed to keep his vehicle under proper control.

After the accident Mazanza did not stop but sped off to Chitungwiza.

He was arrested the same day in Unit N Seke.

The court heard that he obtained his license on February 3, 2012 and did not have five years' experience driving public service vehicles.

He also did not have a valid defensive driving certificate and a medical certificate as required by the law.
