ACTING President Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday distributed an additional 3,000 day-old chicks to residents in Nkulumane constituency, bringing to 18,000 the number of birds he has donated. The chicks are part of a poultry project he unveiled last month. The programme which is anchored on the country's economic blueprint, Zim-Asset, seeks to empower communities through utilising local resources.
Last week, Acting President Mphoko donated 6,000 chicks to more than 300 families in Nketa-Emganwini constituency's ward 24. The Acting President also donated groceries to a visually impaired elderly woman who was also part of the community that benefited from the poultry scheme.
Addressing the beneficiaries before handing over the chicks, Acting President Mphoko said it was the duty of the leadership to develop communities. "We're donating these chicks because we want to economically empower our communities through this income-generating project. I'm not expecting to get a commission or tithe from you because I'm not God, but an angel who was just sent to deliver the goods," he said.
The Acting President said the programme was aimed at reducing poverty and bringing development to local communities. He said by giving the groups chicks, he was assisting them to kick-start their poultry projects which should improve their livelihoods.
"I'm giving you these chicks free of charge so that you start these income-generating projects to improve your standard of living and please feed these birds, don't let them die," said the Acting President.
He warned the residents against unruly elements who he said were trying to sabotage the project, which he said would be spread to every part of the country.
Nkulumane MP Killian Sibanda thanked the Acting President for empowering his constituency. He urged the residents to embrace the project and work hard.
The Acting President will next Sunday donate another batch of chicks to residents in the same constituency. The chicks were sourced from commercial white farmer Mr Peter Cunningham who owns Maleme Farm in Matobo.
